Rheinmetall breaks ground to expand Quebec facility

Rheinmetall Canada marks its 40th anniversary with a groundbreaking ceremony to expand its Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, facility, reinforcing its long-term commitment to driving Canadian innovation and increasing its advanced manufacturing capacity. Rheinmetall’s expansion will increase the production space by 4830 m2 and grow the warehousing capacity by 2230 m2, which will significantly enhance the industrial foundation required to produce, integrate, and sustain advanced autonomous Uncrewed Ground Systems (UGS) in Canada.

This increased footprint in the Montérégie, Quebec, region comes at an important time as Rheinmetall adapts to the growing demand of its land autonomy solutions. In the last year alone, Rheinmetall has established three Advanced land autonomy centres of excellence to fully localize Canadian-developed solutions and expedite the delivery of these strategic capabilities.

At the core of this expansion are Rheinmetall’s PATH autonomy technology and the Mission Master suite of autonomous UGSs. Developed in Canada with feedback from Rheinmetall’s closest allies across the transatlantic, these solutions are now positioned for domestic scalable production and long-term support.

Rheinmetall has been deeply rooted in the Canadian defence ecosystem, which has enabled a rapid, responsive, and creative approach to research and development. Over the years, Rheinmetall has collaborated with a growing list of Canadian partners across industry, academia, and research centres, including Zeal Motor, Université de Sherbrooke, Quaze Technologies, and the Centre d’Innovation du Haut-Richelieu. This ecosystem of land autonomy collaborators continues to grow and demonstrates that the sovereign industrial capability is here and ready to respond.

Rheinmetall’s domestic supply chain spans nearly 1000 Canadian small- to medium-businesses, more than 600 of which are based in Quebec alone. These partnerships remain central to Rheinmetall’s international success as it expands production and responds to future domestic and allied requirements.

Since 2024, Rheinmetall Canada has invested more than Can$150 million domestically in advanced technologies and capability development. Over its 40-year presence in Canada, the company has delivered more than 20 programs to the Canadian Armed Forces while generating over Can$1.5 billion in economic benefits.

The future for Rheinmetall looks bright as it recommits to additional opportunities in engineering, advanced manufacturing, systems integration, software development, logistics, and in-service support. It will also continue to drive innovation alongside its Canadian suppliers, research and technology companies and to create export opportunities through its global network.
