Belgium has transferred the first of four Tripartite-class minehunters, BNS Bellis, to the Bulgarian Navy to strengthen NATO security in the Black Sea.

On October 30, the Belgian Defense officially transferred the Tripartite-class minehunter BNS Bellis to the Bulgarian Navy. This milestone marks the first of four Belgian minehunters slated for transfer to Bulgaria, directly bolstering NATO’s maritime security capabilities in the strategically critical Black Sea region.

The handover realizes a broader trilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Belgium, the Netherlands, and Bulgaria, which outlines the transfer of seven minehunters in total to the Bulgarian fleet.

A Second Life for Proven Capabilities

The transfer of BNS Bellis aligns with the gradual phase-out of the current Tripartite fleet by the Belgian and Dutch navies. Both nations are currently modernizing their fleets through the Replacement Mine Counter Measures (rMCM) program, transitioning to a new generation of unmanned systems and advanced sensors.

Despite this generational shift, the Tripartite vessels remain highly capable and fully deployable assets. Bulgaria will finance the maintenance, recommissioning, and operational deployment of these ships, supported by Belgian industrial expertise and technical know-how.

Strengthening NATO’s Collective Security

In a shifting geopolitical landscape where maritime infrastructure, global trade, and freedom of navigation are under increasing pressure, mine countermeasure (MCM) capabilities hold major strategic value. The addition of the Bellis to the Bulgarian Navy ensures that these proven MCM assets remain active within the Alliance.

“Thanks to the transfer of the ship to Bulgaria, a proven capability remains operational within NATO,” stated Lieutenant-General Bernard Phaleg, Belgium’s Director General Material Resources and National Armaments Director. “We are thus strengthening an ally, supporting security in the Black Sea region, and ensuring that the investments and expertise accumulated over decades continue to demonstrate their value.”

Beyond securing its own territorial waters and trade routes, Bulgaria will use these assets to support the training of Ukrainian naval crews who operate the same class of vessels. By sharing platforms and operational experience, the participating nations aim to ensure the freedom of navigation and the protection of maritime infrastructure across the Black Sea and the wider region.
