The launch ceremony was attended by the Minister of Home Affairs, the Honorable Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution bin Ismail, along with the Minister of Home Affairs of Türkiye, His Excellency Mustafa Çiftçi, and the Minister of Industry and Technology of Türkiye, His Excellency Mehmet Fatih Kacır, as well as delegations from both countries.
The MPMS 1 construction marks a significant advancement in the development of strategic assets, expanding the scope of operations and strengthening Malaysia’s maritime presence in the sea. As a multi-purpose ship, MPMS 1 is designed to perform maritime surveillance, search and rescue operations (CARILAMAT), humanitarian assistance, disaster response, and various other operational needs.
The Director General of Maritim Malaysia, Laksamana Maritim Datuk Haji Mohd Rosli bin Abdullah, said the MPMS 1 is a capability multiplier that will enhance Malaysia’s maritime operational resilience in the face of increasingly complex maritime security challenges.

“This capability is a more effective way to ensure operations. Our focus is to ensure that this new capability is fully utilized to safeguard the country’s security, sovereignty, and interests in the Maritime Zone,” he said.
The construction of MPMS 1 has reached approximately 85 percent and is ahead of schedule. Meanwhile, the construction of MPMS 2 has reached 34.05 percent, compared to the planned 32 percent, indicating positive progress in the efforts to strengthen Malaysia’s maritime capabilities on a phased basis.
MPMS 1 is expected to be brought back to Malaysia in early 2027 and is planned to join the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) 2027 to introduce the agency’s new capabilities to the public and the international maritime community.
The MPMS project also reflects Malaysia-Turkey’s strategic relationship in the maritime industry, in addition to opening up broader cooperation between Malaysia’s Maritime and Coast Guard and the Turkish Coast Guard in the field of training, capacity building, CARILAMAT, information sharing, and joint exercises.
The event was also attended by the Deputy Director General of Maritime Logistics Malaysia, Lieutenant Admiral Maritim Datuk Saiful Lizan bin Ibrahim, senior officers from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Malaysia Maritime and the Ministry of Economy, the Malaysian Ambassador to the Republic of Türkiye, and the Consul General in Istanbul, as well as agency representatives and stakeholders directly involved in the shipbuilding project. The event was also attended by representatives from the Government of the Republic of Türkiye and the management team of Desan Shipyard.
The launch of MPMS 1 is a concrete step towards forming a more modern, resilient, and responsive Malaysian maritime fleet to protect the people, preserve maritime resources, and safeguard national interests, in line with the mandate to Control, Protect, and Rescue.
