German drone maker Quantum Systems says its Apex Recordhunter, a battery-powered experimental drone, flew at 777 km/h (483 mph) in a record attempt this week, faster than any battery-electric drone has flown before and well above the speed of Russia’s jet-powered attack drones. Martin Karkour, the company’s chief revenue officer, announced the run, saying the drone covered more than 200 m every second. The result is not yet an official record. Speed records must be flown in both directions to cancel out the effect of wind, and Karkour said the return leg is still to come. “Push that hard and physics pushes back,” Karkour wrote. “I think that is the most honest feedback an engineering team can get, and everything we learned yesterday goes into the next flight.” The new figure is a big jump from the Apex Recordhunter’s last mark. In internal testing on June 26, 2026, the drone, built by Quantum Systems’ experimental N3XT team in Germany, reached 699 km/h (434 mph) in straight and level flight, which the company called an unofficial world-best for a battery-electric flying object. That was already above the roughly 658 km/h (409 mph) cited in reporting as the official record for an electric aircraft. The Apex was developed over about a year as a technology demonstrator, and it runs on special battery cells developed by a Porsche subsidiary. Quantum Systems says the point of the project goes beyond records. Co-CEO Sven Kruck tied the work directly to the threat from Russia’s jet-powered Geran drones, which he said can reportedly fly at 500 to 600 km/h, too fast for many of the small interceptor drones Ukraine uses against slower Shahed-type drones. “Russia is accelerating the threat. We are engineering the response,” Kruck said. The company says the propulsion, energy management and high-speed flight lessons from Apex feed into its interceptor development, though the record drone itself is not a weapon and does not share hardware with combat systems. The interceptors come from WIY Drones, a Kyiv-based company that works with Quantum Systems through a joint venture called Quantum WIY Industries, and Quantum Systems has secured an order for 15,000 of WIY’s Strila interceptor drones for Ukraine’s National Guard. Russia launched 3,177 jet-powered drones at Ukraine in September alone, and Ukrainian manufacturers have rushed several faster interceptors into service since late summer to try to catch them. Quantum Systems, based near Munich, is best known for its Vector reconnaissance drone, widely used by Ukraine’s military, and this year closed a funding round worth $1.2 billion, one of the largest in European defense technology.
