Jaguar Land Rover unveiled three variants of a new military vehicle called the Defender Wolf Series II at the British Army’s DVD 2026 exhibition in Bedfordshire on Sept. 16, aiming to replace the Land Rover that has served British forces for more than 70 years.

The event, held at the Millbrook proving ground, is where the Ministry of Defence is expected to evaluate bids for its Light Mobility Vehicle program, a contract to replace the aging fleet of Wolf-spec Land Rovers and Pinzgauer trucks still in service. JLR’s Defender division is competing for that work, and Thomas Mueller, the company’s chief technology officer, said on LinkedIn that the vehicles shown were “the first of many variants of Defender Wolf Series II to come.”

“This is Defender’s first military vehicle launch since the original Wolf, which served the British Armed Forces for more than 70 years,” Mueller said.

Other reporting around the launch describes four planned variants in total, a tactical mobility vehicle, a general mobility vehicle, an ambulance and a utility vehicle, though Mueller’s post confirmed only three were shown on the day. JLR has not said which of the four were unveiled or when the remaining variant might follow.

The new vehicle marks a structural break from its predecessor. Where the original Wolf used a traditional ladder-frame chassis, the Series II is built on Defender’s D7x monocoque platform, the same underlying architecture used in JLR’s civilian Defender models. “Built on Defender’s lightweight D7x monocoque architecture, it delivers exceptional durability, increased payload capability and outstanding strength,” Mueller said. JLR says the vehicle underwent more than 62,000 tests as part of its Extreme Event Test procedure, the company’s standard evaluation for vehicles built to operate in harsh conditions.

The Wolf nameplate dates to 1998, when Land Rover began producing a militarized version of the Defender for British forces. At its peak, more than 8,000 Wolf-spec Land Rovers were in British Army service, and the vehicle has also been used by allied militaries. The replacement effort gained urgency after the original Wolf’s limitations, including insufficient protection against improvised explosive devices, became apparent during operations in Afghanistan.

JLR has also created a new Defender Defense Division to support military and government customers beyond this single program, and the company says the Defender name already serves police, border, fire and mountain rescue agencies in various countries. The Series II’s engine is built in Wolverhampton, though JLR has not disclosed its specifications.
